Meet Our Staff
Rita currently teaches group exercise classes in Indo-Row, Fitness, Rowing/TRX, and Power Pump. She is also certified in Schwinn Cycling and PiYo, and is a Certified Personal Trainer. She has a B.S. from Indiana University in Sports Marketing and Management. Rita believes exercise and fitness should be fun and accessible to everyone. For fun, Rita enjoys biking, hiking, traveling, and spending time with her family.
Alison Miller is certified through AFAA Primary Group Exercise and ACE Personal Trainer. She has a B.S. in Health Communication and an M.S. in Sport and Recreation Leadership. She is trained to teach in many formats of group exercise classes. Some of her favorites are Kickboxing, Step, Pilates, Yoga, Water, and everything in-between! Alison has lived all over- from Virginia, S. Carolina, Alaska, and now Indiana. She also works full-time as the Health and Wellness Coordinator for the City of Bloomington.
Heidi DeSalle is an AFAA certified instructor who has been leading group exercise classes since 2001. Her specialty is Step and strength based classes, but she is also certified in R.I.P.P.E.D., Deep Water Exercise, Trekking, Insanity, and TurboKick. She loves group exercise because working out with others allows for more support, more challenges, and a lot more fun! When she is not at the Y, she is taking care of her two boys.
Jamie has been teaching group exercise classes since January 2012. She's an AFAA certified instructor and she’s also a certified personal trainer. Jamie teaches many classes at the Y, including RIPPED, Piyo, Deep Water Aquafit, Power Pump & Total Body Strength. She is also certified in TurboKick.
Jeannie began teaching at the YMCA in 2011. She believes that the enjoyment of a workout is critical to the adherence of an active lifestyle. As such, she aims to deliver a fun, effective and safe class to her participants.
She received her bachelor’s degree in biology education at Ball State University and her masters degree in the same area of study at Miami of Ohio. Jeannie is certified through the American Council on Exercise as a Group Exercise instructor and also as a Health Coach. Currently at the Y she teaches prime time plus, shallow water aqua fit, and deep water running. Besides teaching in this capacity, she also teaches biology courses at Ivy Tech. Getting people excited and engaged in whatever it is she happens to be teaching is her motivator.
Kim began her journey as a group exercise instructor at the Y by training in-house to teach water fitness classes. Kim says she was trained “by some of the best instructors in the business!” Since then, she has trained to teach Total Body Fitness, Zumba, Zumba Gold, and Aqua Zumba. She participates regularly in continuing education classes at national fitness conferences. Having discovered for herself the benefits of regular and varied exercise, Kim is committed to assisting individuals in their efforts to stay fit no matter what their age—and to have FUN while doing so!
Nancy has been in the health and wellness field for 34 years. She started by teaching Jackie Sorensen's aerobic dance. Being a choreographer and dancer over the years has been the source of Nancy's joy in teaching. She has taught everything from hi/low aerobics, strength and conditioning, step, Total Body Strength, Kick Boxing, Cycling and Zumba. She loves creating long lasting relationships with her participants and believes in life long wellness.
Walter has 13 years of experience in the fitness and wellness field and he has worked at the Y for more than 5 years. He teaches TRX Suspension Training, Total Body strength classes and is a Certified Schwinn cycling instructor. Walter is also a certified personal trainer through the American Council of Exercise. In addition, he also has the honor to work with persons with disabilities in the City of Bloomington.
Gloria’s lifelong practice has been Yoga, so anyone who joins her water classes can expect to be instructed on alignment and how to move using your core. Gloria appreciates using good form to stay safe and get stronger. Gloria teaches Deep Water Aqua Fit and Deep Water Arthritis Aquatics and has been a Y instructor through Yoga, Pilates, and Water Fitness for more than 30 years. She has earned certifications in Basic Fitness, Healthy Lifestyles, Working with Active Older Adults, Water Fitness, Arthritis Aquatics, Walk With Ease, Pilates, and Yoga.
Jen began working at the Y in 2011. She has a Bachelor’s degree in Recreation from Franklin College and is certified in Group Exercise, ACE .7, ACSM .7, ACE 1, ACSM 1, and Water Fit 1. She currently teaches Shallow and Deep Water Aqua Fit classes. Jen enjoys helping members set goals and pushes them to work hard in group exercise classes so that they can lead healthier lives. She loves witnessing transformation as they build confidence and experience higher self-esteem by reaching and exceeding their goals.
Kathy began teaching at the Y in 2012, and currently teaches Shallow Water Aqua Fit. Before coming to the Y, she taught Aqua Fitness classes for more than 11 years at Fit for Life in Bedford. She is trained to teach water fitness classes in shallow or deep water, is certified in YMCA Healthy Lifestyles and Principles, YMCA Foundations of Strength and Conditioning, and recently attended a training with nationally recognized water fitness trainer, Mary Sanders. In her spare time, Kathy enjoys reading, photography, and of course, working out!
Naomi began teaching at the Y in 2015, but she’s been working in exercise and wellness field for many years. Here’s her story: “I’m a wife, a mom of three and a long time Bloomington resident. My weight loss journey began ten years ago when I weighed 260 pounds. Prior to my weight loss, I was active in junior high and early high school, participating in soccer and cheerleading, but gained a lot of weight in my early adult years. Since then, I have lost 140 pounds. My favorite physical activities are running, weight training and PiYo. I am an ISSA Certified Personal Trainer, CPR/AED Certified, a Certified PiYo Instructor, a Certified Group Exercise Instructor, Beachbody Coach and founder of FormFit Personal Training. I am passionate about helping others achieve their own personal health and fitness goals through sound nutrition advice, exercise planning and personal support. My motto, ‘Fit for life.’”
Pam came to the Y as an Arthritis Aquatics participant fifteen years ago. She eventually moved up to taking deep water classes, and soon started teaching both types of classes! Pam says that her favorite thing about teaching at the Y is getting to know the participants. Pam says “the people in my classes are awesome, and we are like a family!” Pam is excited to be back to teaching after several years away, and she is happy to report that it’s like she never left! #lovemyymcafamily
“Being a Pisces, the water is a huge attraction for me. I have been teaching water fitness for over 25 years in both shallow and deep formats and love the support and resistance that the water provides.” Gayle is certified through AEA/Arthritis Foundation to teach Arthritis Aquatics classes and has been doing so for 20 years.
Gayle’s other interests and certifications include: Total Body Strength and Pilates Certification through Total Body Gym, YMCA Cycle and Schwinn instructor training: MPower with Watts, Indo-Row, Pilates and a 200 hour teacher certification in yoga. Gayle is currently pursuing a 500 hour advanced yoga teacher training.
Gayle’s motto is “Move with Joy” OR “Joyfully Move”.
Shellie has been teaching at the YMCA for more than 4 years and loves teaching group exercise classes. She teaches a wide variety of classes, including TRX, Bootcamp, Insanity, Cycle-In, Power Pump, Total Body Fitness, ShockWave, R.I.P.P.E.D., and other cardio-based classes. She also teaches water fitness, including Aqua Fit Deep, Aqua Fit Shallow, and Deep Water Running. In addition to her teaching role, Shellie serves as the TRX Team Captain, offering training, coaching and leadership to other TRX instructors on staff. Shellie is also a certified personal trainer through NCCPT and works with a variety of clients.
Deb has been teaching water fitness classes off and on for nearly 30 years. She currently teaches Shallow Water Aqua Fit and Arthritis Aquatics. She is certified by the Arthritis Foundation and has trained with the Aquatic Fitness Association. In the past she was a lifeguard and lifeguard trainer and taught swim lessons for many years. Swimming and water exercise have been a passion for Deb through her life. Deb enjoys teaching and exercising in the pool because it allows the body to move so freely. In addition to water fitness, Deb has been a yoga instructor at the Y for more than 20 years, teaching many levels of Yoga, Family and Kids, and Chair Yoga.
