Meet Our Staff
Alison Miller is certified through AFAA Primary Group Exercise and ACE Personal Trainer. She has a B.S. in Health Communication and an M.S. in Sport and Recreation Leadership. She is trained to teach in many formats of group exercise classes. Some of her favorites are Kickboxing, Step, Pilates, Yoga, Water, and everything in-between! Alison has lived all over- from Virginia, S. Carolina, Alaska, and now Indiana. She also works full-time as the Health and Wellness Coordinator for the City of Bloomington.
Chris is currently a group exercise instructor for classes in Indo-Row, ShockWave and Schwinn Cycling. In addition to these classes, she is also a YMCA Diabetes Prevention Lifestyle Coach, Weight Loss Healthy Lifestyle Coach, Endurance Coach, and the Cardiopulmonary Rehab/Adult Health Assistant working with special populations and active older adults for over 10 years. Her YMCA certifications include: Group Exercise Instructor, Principles of Healthy Lifestyle, and Strength and Conditioning. Chris has a B.S. from Indiana University and has worked for IU for over 20 years, currently at the Kelley School of Business MBA Program. Chris believes a good group exercise class should be fun and functional as well as energetic. In her free time, she enjoys swimming, biking (mountain and road) and run/walking. She is pursuing her certification as ACE certified personal trainer.
Cynthia hails from Belgium and comes to Bloomington via New Mexico and Virginia. She has a degree in banking and finance. Cynthia became interested in Zumba through participating in classes here at the Y. Inspired by the Latin music and her love of dance, Cynthia became a certified Zumba fitness instructor in 2012. She currently is certified to teach Zumba Fitness and Zumba Toning. "What I love about Zumba is how the different music styles inspire people to move and have fun -- it's actually 'exercise in disguise!' Zumba is a fitness program for people of any fitness level or age, but it is also effective." Cynthia believes that good health stems from a combination of those things that are great for the mind, body and soul.
Dave has been a YMCA Instructor for more than 4 years. He currently teaches Total Body Fitness, but also enjoys teaching strength and conditioning classes, boot camp, mega jam, and kickboxing. He enjoys seeing clients progress through their personal wellness goals. Dave focuses on safe progression and multi-level classes that meet the needs of a variety of participants. He enjoys being able to challenge the participants regardless of their initial skill level or experience.
Dr. Bryon Craig
Byron began teaching cycling at the YMCA in 2011. He began his group exercise instructor career by teaching cycling at the SRSC at Indiana University, and eventually moved to the YMCA where he is happy to contribute to the livelihood of our participants, especially our early morning cycling devotees! The past three years have also helped him to improve his own health and spirit in many ways. He completed a Schwinn Cycling Instructor Course in Chicago, IL. He completed his Ph.D. at IU and currently teaches in the Kelley School of Business. About his teaching, Byron says, “There is nothing special about me. I just love leading a class and helping people really reach to work their hardest during the 45 minutes they are in class.”
Heidi DeSalle is an AFAA certified instructor who has been leading group exercise classes since 2001. Her specialty is Step and strength based classes, but she is also certified in R.I.P.P.E.D., Deep Water Exercise, Trekking, Insanity, and TurboKick. She loves group exercise because working out with others allows for more support, more challenges, and a lot more fun! When she is not at the Y, she is taking care of her two boys.
Jamie has been teaching group exercise classes since January 2012. She's an AFAA certified instructor and she’s also a certified personal trainer. Jamie teaches many classes at the Y, including RIPPED, Piyo, Deep Water Aquafit, Power Pump & Total Body Strength. She is also certified in TurboKick.
Jeannie began teaching at the YMCA in 2011. She believes that the enjoyment of a workout is critical to the adherence of an active lifestyle. As such, she aims to deliver a fun, effective and safe class to her participants.
She received her bachelor’s degree in biology education at Ball State University and her masters degree in the same area of study at Miami of Ohio. Jeannie is certified through the American Council on Exercise as a Group Exercise instructor and also as a Health Coach. Currently at the Y she teaches prime time plus, shallow water aqua fit, and deep water running. Besides teaching in this capacity, she also teaches biology courses at Ivy Tech. Getting people excited and engaged in whatever it is she happens to be teaching is her motivator.
Justin is a native of Michigan and found his way to Indiana for Kelley School of Business where he has been a faculty member for 3 years. He quickly found his way to the Y because of his love of Zumba and an active lifestyle. His passion for dance and group exercise comes from being involved in team sports, show choirs, and dance troupes from the age of 11. Justin’s focus with fitness is all about having fun. His philosophy is that fitness is a lifestyle, not just an activity, and that it should be as much as possible. His Dance Mix class fuses popular Top 40s music with fun dance styles to create a blend that makes fitness enjoyable for anyone.
Kim began her journey as a group exercise instructor at the Y by training in-house to teach water fitness classes. Kim says she was trained “by some of the best instructors in the business!” Since then, she has trained to teach Total Body Fitness, Zumba, Zumba Gold, and Aqua Zumba. She participates regularly in continuing education classes at national fitness conferences. Having discovered for herself the benefits of regular and varied exercise, Kim is committed to assisting individuals in their efforts to stay fit no matter what their age—and to have FUN while doing so!
Linda has been a cycling instructor at the Y since 1998. Having been an avid outside bicyclist since the mid 1970’s, the transition to indoor cycling seemed to be a natural fit. Linda enjoys introducing “newbies” to the sport of cycling and many of her class participants have made the transition to bicycling outside. Linda is certified through the YMCA as a cycling instructor and has attended numerous workshops and continuing education classes. She was also more recently trained to be an Indo-Row instructor. In addition to her instructor duties, Linda maintains and repairs the bikes and rowers.
Nancy has been in the health and wellness field for 34 years. She started by teaching Jackie Sorensen's aerobic dance. Being a choreographer and dancer over the years has been the source of Nancy's joy in teaching. She has taught everything from hi/low aerobics, strength and conditioning, step, Total Body Strength, Kick Boxing, Cycling and Zumba. She loves creating long lasting relationships with her participants and believes in life long wellness.
Pete began working at the YMCA as a Wellness Coach in 2009 and soon after became an instructor for TRX and Total Body Fitness. Pete is an avid fitness enthusiast, former two-time state racquetball champ, a city tennis tourney age-division runner-up, and a Boston Marathon finisher (under 3 hours!). Pete is also an award-winning sports writer, children’s author, and freelance writer. He’s written 20 children’s books as well as 3 books about IU Athletics (2 on basketball, 1 on baseball).
Priscilla has been a group exercise instructor at the YMCA since January 2011. She is also a certified personal trainer through the National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM). Priscilla teaches high intensity cardiovascular/strength conditioning classes such as R.I.P.P.E.D. (Resistance, Interval, Power, Plyometrics, Endurance, and Diet), Insanity, and Bootcamp as well as strength flexibility classes such as PiYo (Pilates Yoga) and Roll and Recover (foam rolling). Teaching classes at the YMCA allows Priscilla to share her passion for fitness and healthy lifestyle living. Priscilla enjoys teaching classes where participants are having fun while getting a full body workout. She is able to create a “fitness experience” that challenges participants to strive for their very best and gives them the results they are looking for if they put in the effort.
Rita currently teaches group exercise classes in Indo-Row, Fitness, Rowing/TRX, and Power Pump. She is also certified in Schwinn Cycling and PiYo, and is a Certified Personal Trainer. She has a B.S. from Indiana University in Sports Marketing and Management. Rita believes exercise and fitness should be fun and accessible to everyone. For fun, Rita enjoys biking, hiking, traveling, and spending time with her family.
Susy has been a group exercise instructor at the Y for more than 33 years and is certified with the American Council on Exercise and the YMCA of the USA. She’s taught a variety of classes through the years for both land and water exercise, including high-low aerobics, step, Pilates, aqua fit, Arthritis Aquatics, gymnastics, and more! Susy currently teaches Morning Mix. Her favorite parts about teaching are the class participants and the many friendships she’s made. In a group setting or one-on-one, she loves helping people realize how exercise can make them feel happier and more energized. During her career in health and wellness, Susy served as the YMCA Fitness Coordinator, the Health and Wellness Coordinator at College Internship Program, and currently teaches exercise classes at Bell Trace Senior Living Community.
Walter has 13 years of experience in the fitness and wellness field and he has worked at the Y for more than 5 years. He teaches TRX Suspension Training, Total Body strength classes and is a Certified Schwinn cycling instructor. Walter is also a certified personal trainer through the American Council of Exercise. In addition, he also has the honor to work with persons with disabilities in the City of Bloomington.
Adrienne is an instructor in Water Fitness at the Y (Shallow Water and Deep Water Aqua Fit). Adrienne believes that if you find a workout you enjoy you will find the time to make it a priority. She also feels strongly that our workouts should stimulate our mind and body, and challenge us in a way that will encourage us to be our best selves in order to get the most out of life!
Anne is originally from Olney, Illinois home of the white squirrels! She has been teaching at the Y for the last 16 years. Anne is certified through the Arthritis Foundation to teach arthritis classes in the water. She currently teaches several arthritis classes each week, as well as a more active shallow water aqua fit class. When not teaching at the Y, Anne is Parish Visitor for First United Methodist church, visiting the elderly in their homes and in the hospital. Anne’s goal in life whether teaching or visiting is to make each day as happy and healthy as possible. She enjoys the interaction with her participants in class and has seen first-hand how helpful the classes are for her participants not only for their health, but also in building new friendships.
Tatiana Kolovou, MBA has over 25 years of experience in the health and fitness industry as a fitness manager, national presenter and coach. Tatiana has been an instructor at the Y since 2008, teaching Cycling, Indo-Row, ShockWave, and Water Exercise classes. In addition to teaching group exercise, Tatiana coaches business students and corporate executives to design persuasive and motivating messages that get results as a faculty member in the Kelley School of Business, and owns Team Performance – a training and professional development company. Her education includes a BS in Exercise Science and a Masters in Business Administration. She is certified by ACE, ACSM, and is a Master Trainer for the Schwinn Cycling Education Team.
Kristy has been a member of the Y since 1994, and started as a participant in indoor cycling in 2006 when the bikes were in what is now the Total Body Fitness Studio, just off of the Wellness Center. She was walking the track and admired how hard they worked in the class and that the sense of community within the class was obvious, even on the other side of the glass. In 2007 Kristy signed on as a cycling instructor. She has since expanded her teaching to include Indo-Row, TRX, BOSU, Power Pump, and ShockWave, while continuing to love teaching Cycle-in. In addition, Kristy earned her ACE Group Exercise Certification and is an ACE Certified Personal Trainer.
Shellie has been teaching at the YMCA for more than 4 years and loves teaching group exercise classes. She teaches a wide variety of classes, including TRX, Bootcamp, Insanity, Cycle-In, Power Pump, Total Body Fitness, ShockWave, R.I.P.P.E.D., and other cardio-based classes. She also teaches water fitness, including Aqua Fit Deep, Aqua Fit Shallow, and Deep Water Running. In addition to her teaching role, Shellie serves as the TRX Team Captain, offering training, coaching and leadership to other TRX instructors on staff. Shellie is also a certified personal trainer through NCCPT and works with a variety of clients.
Maria has been working at the Y for more than 25 years and strongly believes in the motto “Movement is Life.” She completed her bachelors and masters degrees from Indiana University and is certified through the American Council on Exercise as a Fitness Instructor, Personal Trainer, and Health Coach. She currently teaches Total Body Strength and Aerobics classes at the Y. In addition to her work at the Y, Maria is the head coach of the St. Charles Middle School Cross Country and Track and Field teams. She enjoys working with a diverse population and helping people of all ages learn new skills to improve their overall health and wellness.
“Being a Pisces, the water is a huge attraction for me. I have been teaching water fitness for over 25 years in both shallow and deep formats and love the support and resistance that the water provides.” Gayle is certified through AEA/Arthritis Foundation to teach Arthritis Aquatics classes and has been doing so for 20 years.
Gayle’s other interests and certifications include: Total Body Strength and Pilates Certification through Total Body Gym, YMCA Cycle and Schwinn instructor training: MPower with Watts, Indo-Row, Pilates and a 200 hour teacher certification in yoga. Gayle is currently pursuing a 500 hour advanced yoga teacher training.
Gayle’s motto is “Move with Joy” OR “Joyfully Move”.
Debbie has been in the fitness industry teaching group exercise classes for over 30 years. She developed such a passion for exercise that she returned to school after 17 years to pursue a degree in Exercise Science, graduating with a BS in Exercise Science in 2003. In Debbie’s words, “I have seen the fitness industry evolve, grow and achieve widespread acceptance by the public, professional organizations and the medical community. Regular physical activity improves quality of life, health, and can prevent and/or rehabilitate many health problems. Teaching group exercise allows me to reach out to a larger population and to share my passion for exercise in the hopes of helping others develop a healthy and active lifestyle.” Along with her degree, Debbie holds certifications as an ACE certified personal trainer and group ex instructor, and an ACSM Certified Health Fitness Specialist.
Terri has been teaching fitness and dance since 2000. Her energetic and friendly teaching style help build a true community in the classes she teaches. She comes to the Y with experience and certifications in yoga, Pilates, Total Body Fitness, strength training, and dance.
I recently moved to Bloomington, Indiana in September of 2015 and am employed at the main library at IU. I am originally from eastern Wisconsin where I taught Tabata/HIIT classes at a YMCA there. I plan on integrating skills from those formats into my Bootcamp class here at Monroe County YMCA. I grew up playing soccer and volleyball and currently enjoy running and watching the 13 time World Champion Green Bay Packers in my free time!
Nancy Smithers is a certified AFAA instructor who has been teaching group exercise since 2007. She and her family moved here in July 2015 from the St. Louis area. Nancy enjoys teaching a wide variety of classes such as Kickboxing, Boxing, HIIT classes, Cardio Mix, Body Pump, Pilates and Beginning Yoga. Nancy loves to encourage others to move and live a healthy balanced life. Creating a fun, inclusive atmosphere where all feel welcome to participate in her classes is her goal. When not at the YMCA she enjoys riding her bike and spending time with her two elementary age kids and husband of 15 years.
Helen Siek is AFAA, AEA, and ACE Certified and has been teaching Group Exercise since 2003. Teaching group exercise feeds her passion to help others live happier, healthier lives. She is certified to teach cycling, water exercise, strength, kettlebells, TRX, kickboxing, metabolic training, and Total Body Gravity System. When she’s not teaching or personal training at the Y, Helen loves spending time with her husband and three children.
Christy is a Registered Nurse and is currently pursuing her Master in Nursing with a concentration in Family Medicine. She hopes to practice as a Nurse Practitioner in the community in the coming years. Christy developed a love of group exercise through her own health and fitness journey. She loves the energy and the experience that the group exercise setting provides. She loves helping others in their own fitness journey and now believes that health is a way of life, not just a destination. She earned her ACE Group Exercise Instructor Certification in 2016 and loves all group exercise formats. Christy is also certified in Insanity and R.I.P.P.E.D.
